Denture with Overbar
Implant bar overdentures combine the stability of an implant with the look of a denture, seating directly onto the gum line implant using as few as four screws. This hybrid implant option gives a patient a lifelike strength and firmness.
- Edentulous patients requiring enhanced retention and stability through implant support
- Cases with sufficient bone volume for bar-supported implants
- Patients seeking improved chewing efficiency and speech over traditional dentures
- Individuals with difficulty retaining conventional dentures due to ridge resorption
- Situations where a removable solution is preferred over a fixed restoration
- Insufficient bone volume or quality for implant placement
- Poor oral hygiene or lack of compliance with maintenance protocols
- Uncontrolled systemic health conditions (e.g., diabetes, immune suppression)
- Bruxism or parafunctional habits that may damage the bar or attachments
- High esthetic demands in areas where bar components may be visible
- Comprehensive evaluation and planning using CBCT and digital models
- Surgical placement of 2–6 implants, depending on arch and design
- Healing period of 3–6 months before bar and prosthesis fabrication
- Precise impression taking using open or closed tray techniques for implant position
- Try-in of framework and wax setup to assess esthetics and function before processing
The overdenture is removable and typically retained with clip attachments on the bar. The bar itself is screw-retained onto implants.
- The bar is milled or cast from titanium or a cobalt-chrome alloy
- Attachments (e.g., Hader, Dolder, or Locator bars) provide retention and can be replaced as needed
- Overdenture is processed with a reinforced acrylic base and high-impact denture teeth
- Regular maintenance of clips and periodic reline may be required over time
- Patient education on hygiene around implants and under the bar is critical
